Welcome to the official web site of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association (MBOTMA), a 501c3 nonprofit, volunteer-based organization serving Minnesota and the Midwest. Our mission is to preserve and promote bluegrass and old-time string band music in Minnesota.

Our activities include four annual festivals, plus numerous concerts, dances, jam sessions, workshops, and educational programs. Our events and programs keep people who love to play and listen to traditional acoustic music busy all year around throughout the state of Minnesota. Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival

Thursday through Sunday, August 11-14, 2016, Richmond, MN
Held annually at El Rancho Manana the second weekend in August, this festival features four days and nights of music on multple stages, great national and regional bands, workshops and showcases. Nominated as IBMA Event of the Year in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2014!

Minnesota Americana-Roots Music Contests
September 1 & 2, 2016 at the Minnesota State Fair

Ready, set, go! Which duo and band will be crowned the 2016 State Champions?

BOTH CONTESTS ARE FULL, but we are making a waiting list in case of cancellation!

Registration is now open for 10 duos and eight bands to compete in MBOTMA's Minnesota Americana-Roots Music Contests, held September 2 & 3 at the Minnesota State Fair. Prizes: cash (up to $1,000), festival gigs, Minnesota Bluegrass articles, recording sessions (audio & video), and ribbons, of course! First-registered-first-served. The Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff 
Friday through Sunday, June 3-5, 2016, Richmond MN

An outdoor festival held every year the weekend after Memorial Day at El Rancho Manana near Richmond, MN, featuring leading regional bluegrass, old-time and related acoustic MBOTMA member bands, plus workshops, jam with the bands, the gathering place, jam sessions, and more.

The Main Stage Schedule is posted, so take a look to see which of your favorite regional bands performed at this year's Homegrown. Plus, we joined forces again this year with area ukulele clubs to bring you the Great Minnesota Uke Gathering!



MBOTMA's Cabin Fever Festival took place on Friday-Sunday April 15-17, 2016, at a new location - theRadisson Harborview Hotel (505 W Superior St) in Duluth MN. Actually, it was held at three locations, all within a block of downtown Duluth. Cabin Fever included stage shows, draw bands, open stage, workshops, and jam sessions around the clock. And, new this year, nightly old-time dances. Featuring: Art Stevenson & Highwater, The Woodpicks, The Bootlickers, O'Neill Family Band, Border Stone, Fish Heads, Def Lester, Biscuit Boys, Riverside Bog Stompers, Timbre Junction, and more.


Friday-Sunday, March 4-6, 2016, Minneapolis MN: The Winter Bluegrass Weekend: A Festival of Bluegrass & Old-Time Music & Dance, Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West Hotel in Plymouth (3131 Campus Dr, I-494 & Hwy 55). Some fifty groups performed bluegrass, old-time stringband, and related forms of acoustic music on several stages, including Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass for the Saturday Night Headline Concert and The Sunny Mountain Serenaders in the Dance Hall.
